Shahjahanpur (Uttar Pradesh): These 80 or so women from the Katri region, Shahjahanpur district, literally light up your life.
They are trained to assemble LED bulbs and decorative lights at competitive prices.
The Indian Industries Association district unit provides training to help these women earn a decent living and rise economically. These women assemble good quality LED bulbs – which are comparable to the branded ones available in the market – and sell them for Rs 50 or even Rs 35 per piece.
Ashok Agarwal, national president of the Association of Indian Industries, told reporters: “The initiative aims to provide financial assistance to rural women and develop it as a cottage industry.”
He said most women have learned the skills to assemble a 9W bulb in 12-15 minutes and are honing their skills on how to assemble string lights.
“We currently have two manufacturing units in operation – one of them is located on the reserve police lines. We will soon be moving one of our units to a village in Mirzapur. From now on, we have provided transportation for the women to come. in Shahjahanpur to train, ”he said.
He added: “We provide raw materials to women. A 9W bulb is not only energy efficient, but also lasts at least two years. Women sell the ampoules for Rs 50 or even less. the women. We haven’t thought about the branding of the product yet, so the product doesn’t have a name. “
Shahjahanpur District Magistrate Indra Vikram Singh, who recently spent time with these workers, placed an order for 1,000 LED bulbs to encourage them.
Interestingly, the Mirzapur and Kalaan regions are part of the Katri belt, which was once infested with dacoits. Several women, who now made bulbs, made their living providing shelter and food for dacoits in the area.
