Janis Carol Emery, 86, of Gardner, Kansas, died Tuesday, September 28, 2021 at Vintage Park Assisted Living, Gardner, Kansas. Visitations will be on Monday, October 11, 2021 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a funeral service on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at 8:30 a.m. at the Bruce Funeral Home, 106 S. Center, Gardner, Kansas 66030, (913) 856-7111 . Interment will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery at 11 a.m. in Leavenworth, Kansas. Commemorative contributions can be made to Amedisys Hospice. Janis was born January 3, 1935 in Lewisville, Ohio, to Roland Hanson and Alpha E. (Bowden) Lumbatis. Janis grew up in Lewisville and graduated from Lewisville High School in 1952. After graduation, she gained a variety of professional experiences, including serving as Assistant Clerk in Ashland Municipal Court for 18 years. She moved to Ashland, Ohio, in 1954 and married Orlan Eugene Emery on June 11, 1955. Janis and her family moved to Overland Park, Kansas, in 1996, where she worked at Dillard Department Store as an associate in sales of fine designer fragrances for 12 years until her retirement in 2011. After her retirement, Janis moved to Gardner, Kansas, in 2015 with her daughter, Dawn Light. Throughout her life Janis enjoyed singing and playing the piano for the church. She played the piano for 17 years for the First Baptist Church, Ashland, Ohio. Most recently, she was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church in Spring Hill, Kansas.

Janis was predeceased by her parents; husband Orlan in 2008; and her daughter Dawn Diane Light in 2021. She is survived by her granddaughters: Stacey (Daniel) Jolliff Light, Overland Park, Kansas, and Nicole (Matthew) Light Densberger, Sacramento, California and her brothers: Dennis Lumbatis and Larry Lumbatis both from Marietta, Ohio and their families.
